A Paleolimnological Perspective on Arctic Mountain Lake Pollution

چکیده
The chemical composition of sediments from the Arctic mountain Lake Bolshoy Vudjavr, situated in western part Russian zone, was studied. lake has been under intense anthropogenic load for more than 90 years since development richest apatite–nepheline deposits world started. A 27 cm thick sediment core sampled central at maximum depth 37.4 m. concentrations 50 elements were analyzed by mass spectral method, ICP-MS. sedimentation rate established change content radioactive isotope 210Pb 2.3 mm/yr. effluent production and atmospheric fallout enrich Vudjavr with alkali alkaline earth metals, N, P, Mn, Fe, Al compounds, rare elements, trace (Sb, Cu, Zn, Pb, Bi, Nb, Ta, Th). Analysis forms showed that studied are mainly found stable fractions—mineral, acid-soluble, associated organic matter. pollution assessed integral index PLI (Pollution Load Index) CF (contamination factor). value sharply increased after “Apatite” Plant had launched a large amount wastewater mines released into lake. highest values detected layers accumulated during period 1990s–2000s. Sb (18.2), P (10.3), Sr (7.8), La (6.0) have among all elements.

A paleolimnological perspective on industrial-era metal pollution in the central Andes, Peru.
To date, few studies have investigated the environmental legacy associated with industrialization in the South American Andes. Here, we present an environmental archive of industrial pollution from (210)Pb-dated lake cores recovered from Laguna Chipian, located near the Cerro de Pasco metallurgical region and Laguna Pirhuacocha, located near the Morococha mining region and the La Oroya smelting...
متن کاملA holocene perspective on algal mercury scavenging to sediments of an Arctic lake.
Anthropogenic activities have increased the amount of mercury (Hg) transported atmospherically to the Arctic. At the same time, recent climate warming is altering the limnology of arctic lakes and ponds, including increases in aquatic primary production. It has been hypothesized that climate-driven increases in aquatic production have enhanced Hg scavenging from the water column, and that this ...
متن کاملHigh-levels of microplastic pollution in a large, remote, mountain lake.
Despite the large and growing literature on microplastics in the ocean, little information exists on microplastics in freshwater systems. This study is the first to evaluate the abundance, distribution, and composition of pelagic microplastic pollution in a large, remote, mountain lake. We quantified pelagic microplastics and shoreline anthropogenic debris in Lake Hovsgol, Mongolia. With an ave...
متن کاملArctic Air Pollution
I n the face of rapid climate change in the Arctic (increasing temperatures, earlier onset of spring snowmelt, sea ice loss, etc.), it is important to improve our knowledge about processes driving these changes. In general, climate models are able to reproduce enhanced warming in the Arctic, the so-called Arctic amplification. However, discrepancies are apparent between observations and global ...
متن کاملA paleolimnological perspective on liming – implications for defining reference conditions in Swedish lakes
Using paleolimnological techniques, I have studied surface-water acidification and the effects of liming in Swedish lakes on a decadal to millennial time-scale. The overall objective was to contribute to the discussion on the fulfilment of goals within the Swedish liming program. One of the main goals of this program is to restore lakes to natural or nearly natural conditions, i.e. to a referen...
